About Air Handlers
The indoor half of your split HVAC system
An air handler is the indoor cabinet that pairs with an outdoor AC condenser or heat pump to form a complete all-electric HVAC system. It houses the evaporator coil (where refrigerant absorbs heat from indoor air) and the blower motor that moves cooled or heated air through your ducts.
Every air handler on this page is factory-ready to pair with our Goodman, Ace Air, and Everwell outdoor units — same brand, matching tonnage, matching refrigerant. We also carry air handlers rated for legacy R-410A systems if you're replacing just the indoor side of an existing setup.
The three things to match when pairing: tonnage (must equal the outdoor unit's), refrigerant (R-32, R-454B, or R-410A), and AHRI certification (the pair must be rated together to hit the advertised SEER2 efficiency).
What to look at when choosing
Five specs that matter when pairing an air handler with an outdoor unit
Tonnage — must match the condenser
The air handler's tonnage rating has to match the outdoor unit's tonnage exactly. A 2.5-ton condenser pairs with a 2.5-ton air handler. Mismatching reduces efficiency, voids the AHRI match, and can damage the system.
Refrigerant compatibility
The air handler must be rated for the same refrigerant as the outdoor unit — R-32, R-454B, or legacy R-410A. Refrigerants are not interchangeable. Most new Goodman and Ace Air units are R-32; match that on the indoor side.
Blower type (ECM vs PSC)
ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) blowers are variable-speed, quieter, and roughly 30% more efficient than legacy PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) motors. Most modern air handlers on this page are ECM — worth the modest price premium for lower energy bills.
Cabinet orientation
Multi-position air handlers can be installed vertical upflow, vertical downflow, horizontal left, or horizontal right — the most flexible option for most homes. Wall-mount and dedicated-upflow variants exist for specific installations like closets and attics.
Heat kit compatibility (optional)
Most air handlers accept an electric heat kit (3kW to 20kW) for supplemental or emergency heat — especially useful when paired with a heat pump in colder climates. Heat kits are sold separately and sized to your home's electrical capacity.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about air handler selection, installation, and pairing
What is an air handler, and do I need one?
An air handler is the indoor half of a split HVAC system. It contains the evaporator coil (where refrigerant absorbs heat from indoor air), a blower motor (which pushes conditioned air through your ducts), and often an optional electric heat kit. If you're buying an AC condenser or heat pump with an all-electric setup, yes — you need a matching air handler. If your home has a gas furnace, an evaporator coil mounted on top of the furnace does this job instead (shop our Evaporator Coils collection for that).
How do I match the right air handler to my condenser?
Three things need to match: (1) tonnage — 2.5-ton condenser = 2.5-ton air handler; (2) refrigerant — R-32, R-454B, or R-410A; (3) AHRI rating — the pair must be certified together to hit the advertised SEER2. Our complete system bundles handle all three automatically. If you're buying standalone, use the Tonnage and Refrigerant filters above, then confirm the AHRI match with us at (352) 438-8992.
What's the difference between ECM and PSC blowers?
ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) blowers are variable-speed — they ramp up and down based on demand, like a car's cruise control. They run quieter, use less electricity (typically 30-40% less), and maintain better humidity control. PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) motors are fixed-speed — on or off, nothing in between. Almost all modern air handlers are ECM; you'll only see PSC on entry-level builder-grade units or very old stock.
Can I replace just the air handler, or do I need the matching condenser too?
You can replace just the air handler if the refrigerant matches your existing outdoor unit. But heads up: if your condenser is more than 8-10 years old, replacing the air handler alone is often a short-term fix. Mixing an old condenser with a new air handler means you'll never hit the newer unit's efficiency rating, and you'll likely be replacing the condenser within a few years anyway. Worth pricing out a full system replacement before committing.
Do I need an electric heat kit?
Only if you're pairing the air handler with a heat pump AND you live in a climate cold enough to need backup heat (roughly, anywhere north of Florida). The heat kit is electric resistance heating that kicks in when the heat pump can't keep up on the coldest days. Size ranges from 3kW (mild climates) to 20kW (very cold climates). If you're pairing with an AC condenser only (cooling), no heat kit needed. Heat kits sold separately.
What does 'multi-position' mean?
Multi-position air handlers can be installed four ways: vertical upflow (air blows up), vertical downflow (air blows down), horizontal left (air flows sideways with drain on the left), or horizontal right. This flexibility covers 95% of residential installations — closets, basements, attics, and utility rooms. A few specialty models (like the Everwell Front Return Wall Mount on this page) are dedicated to a single orientation but offer a smaller footprint for tight spaces.
Does Ace Air Direct ship air handlers nationwide?
Yes. We ship air handlers to all 48 contiguous states from our warehouse in Ocala, FL. Complete systems (condenser + air handler together) ship free. Most orders leave within 1-3 business days via freight carrier with tracking and a scheduled delivery appointment. Local pickup is available in Ocala for additional savings.
