Key Features

What sets the AMST60DU13 apart

Built-In R-32 Evaporator Coil

All-in-one air handler with factory-installed evaporator coil and TXV. Pairs with an R-32 outdoor condenser or heat pump to complete a split system — no separate coil purchase required.

Multi-Position Installation

Supports all four installation orientations — upflow, downflow, horizontal-left, and horizontal-right. A single unit fits virtually any indoor installation scenario: basement, closet, attic, crawlspace, or utility room.

1 HP Multi-Speed ECM Blower

A 1 HP electronically commutated motor (ECM) adjusts airflow precisely to heating and cooling demand. ECM blowers use significantly less electricity than older PSC motors, particularly during long low-speed operation.

Engineered for R-32 Systems

Designed for use with R-32 outdoor condensers and heat pumps — the next-generation residential refrigerant with lower environmental impact than the outgoing R-410A. Not compatible with R-410A or R-22 systems.

Accommodates Electric Heat Kits

Field-installable electric heat kits (sold separately) can be added for supplemental heat when paired with a heat pump, or as the primary heat source in all-electric climates. Heat kit selection depends on your home's heating load and the outdoor unit pairing.

Backed by Goodman

This Goodman AMST multi-position air handler is designed for 5.0 ton R-32 systems and supports upflow, downflow, or horizontal installation. A direct-drive 9-speed ECM blower motor and factory-installed thermal expansion valve match airflow and refrigerant flow to system demand, and a built-in A2L refrigerant sensor monitors for leaks. AHRI Certified and ETL Listed; UL 60335-2-40 compliant.

  • A2L refrigerant compliance — designed and tested to UL 60335-2-40 requirements for R-32 mildly flammable refrigerant safety.
  • Factory-installed RDS leak sensor — designed for the lifespan of the coil to detect refrigerant leaks.
  • Direct-drive 9-speed ECM blower motor — variable airflow speeds for matched comfort and efficiency.
  • Internal factory-installed TXV — thermal expansion valve included for cooling and heat pump applications.
  • All-aluminum evaporator coil — high-performance coated fin stock for durability and heat transfer.
  • Multi-position installation — upflow, downflow, or horizontal — adapts to closets, attics, or basements.
  • Coil mounting track — allows quick repositioning during install or service.
  • Low cabinet air leakage — less than 2.0% at 1.0 inch H₂O per ASHRAE Standard 193.
  • Optional electric heat kits — field-installed kits from 3 kW to 25 kW for supplemental heating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an air handler?
An air handler is the indoor component of a split HVAC system. It houses the blower motor that circulates air through your home, and — in all-in-one units like the AMST60DU13 — a factory-installed evaporator coil. It pairs with an outdoor condenser (for cooling only) or a heat pump (for both heating and cooling). Unlike a gas furnace, an air handler does not burn fuel; it relies on the refrigerant system and/or supplemental electric heat kits for heating.
What's the difference between an air handler and a gas furnace?
A gas furnace burns natural gas or LP to produce heat; an air handler doesn't have a burner. Air handlers are the typical indoor partner for heat pump systems, and are also used in all-electric homes where electric heat strips provide the heating. If you have natural gas service and prefer gas heat, a furnace is likely the right choice; if you're installing a heat pump or going all-electric, an air handler is the match.
What size home does a 5.0-ton air handler serve?
A 5.0-ton air handler is generally appropriate for homes in the 2,500–3,200 sq. ft. range for cooling — but heating load, climate zone, insulation, and window area all affect sizing. A professional Manual J load calculation is the most accurate way to determine the right capacity. The air handler's tonnage should match the outdoor condenser or heat pump tonnage.
What does "Multi-Position" mean?
The AMST60DU13 can be installed in all four orientations: upflow (air enters bottom, exits top — basement/utility room), downflow (air enters top, exits bottom — attic), horizontal-left and horizontal-right (air moves sideways — crawlspaces and tight attics). This flexibility lets your HVAC contractor fit the unit to your home's ductwork without ordering a position-specific model.
What is ECM and why does it matter?
ECM stands for electronically commutated motor. Compared to older PSC (permanent split capacitor) motors, ECM blowers use significantly less electricity, run more quietly, and can smoothly vary speed to match demand. Over long heating and cooling seasons, the efficiency difference adds up to real savings on your electric bill.
Can I add electric heat strips to this air handler?
Yes. The AMST60DU13 is designed to accommodate field-installable electric heat kits (sold separately). Heat kits are commonly added for supplemental backup heat when paired with a heat pump in cold climates, or as the primary heat source in all-electric homes. Your HVAC contractor will select the correct kW rating based on your home's heating load and local electrical service.
Can I use this with an R-410A condenser?
No. The AMST60DU13 is engineered exclusively for R-32 refrigerant systems and is not compatible with R-410A or R-22 outdoor units. R-32 has different operating pressures and oil compatibility — mixing refrigerants will damage equipment and void warranties. Pair only with an R-32 condenser or heat pump.
How do I know if this cabinet size fits my installation?
Goodman cabinet widths: A = 14", B = 17-1/2", C = 21", D = 24-1/2". The AMST60DU13 is a Cabinet D (24-1/2" wide). Cabinet size matters for both the physical installation space and, if you're replacing an existing unit, the ductwork connections. Your HVAC contractor can verify fit against your layout.
How do I register for the 10-year warranty?
Register the unit online at Goodman's warranty registration page within 60 days of installation. You'll need the model number (AMST60DU13), serial number (found on the data plate), installation date, and installing contractor information. Without registration, the warranty reverts to a shorter base term.
