This Goodman AMST multi-position air handler is designed for 5.0 ton R-32 systems and supports upflow, downflow, or horizontal installation. A direct-drive 9-speed ECM blower motor and factory-installed thermal expansion valve match airflow and refrigerant flow to system demand, and a built-in A2L refrigerant sensor monitors for leaks. An air handler is the indoor component of a split HVAC system. It houses the blower motor that circulates air through your home, and — in all-in-one units like the AMST60DU13 — a factory-installed evaporator coil. It pairs with an outdoor condenser (for cooling only) or a heat pump (for both heating and cooling). Unlike a gas furnace, an air handler does not burn fuel; it relies on the refrigerant system and/or supplemental electric heat kits for heating.

What's the difference between an air handler and a gas furnace?

A gas furnace burns natural gas or LP to produce heat; an air handler doesn't have a burner. Air handlers are the typical indoor partner for heat pump systems, and are also used in all-electric homes where electric heat strips provide the heating. If you have natural gas service and prefer gas heat, a furnace is likely the right choice; if you're installing a heat pump or going all-electric, an air handler is the match.

What size home does a 5.0-ton air handler serve?

A 5.0-ton air handler is generally appropriate for homes in the 2,500–3,200 sq. ft. range for cooling — but heating load, climate zone, insulation, and window area all affect sizing. A professional Manual J load calculation is the most accurate way to determine the right capacity. The air handler's tonnage should match the outdoor condenser or heat pump tonnage.

What does "Multi-Position" mean?

The AMST60DU13 can be installed in all four orientations: upflow (air enters bottom, exits top — basement/utility room), downflow (air enters top, exits bottom — attic), horizontal-left and horizontal-right (air moves sideways — crawlspaces and tight attics). This flexibility lets your HVAC contractor fit the unit to your home's ductwork without ordering a position-specific model.

What is ECM and why does it matter?

ECM stands for electronically commutated motor.
