About A/C Split Systems

Complete cooling systems — condenser + air handler, matched and ready to install

An A/C split system is the standard residential cooling setup in the U.S.: an outdoor condenser and an indoor air handler, connected by refrigerant lines and rated together by AHRI as a single system. On this page, every listing is a pre-matched pair — you order one product and get both components on the same freight pallet.

Every system is factory-charged, AHRI-certified, and shipped from our Ocala, FL warehouse — usually out the door within 1-3 business days. We carry Goodman (a Daikin brand), our own Ace Air private label (same Goodman platform, factory-direct pricing), and Everwell for budget-conscious builds.

The three decisions: tonnage (1 ton per 600 sq ft as a starting rule), SEER2 efficiency tier (14.3 is Southern-state minimum; 15.2+ pays back in electric bill savings), and refrigerant (R-32 for new builds, R-410A only if you're matching to an existing R-410A component elsewhere in the system). The matcher at the top of this page walks you through all three in about 60 seconds.

What to look at when choosing

Five things that matter for a matched split system — the first is the whole point

AHRI-certified matching

Every system on this page is an AHRI-certified matched pair — the outdoor condenser and indoor air handler are tested and rated as a unit. This is what guarantees the system hits its advertised SEER2 efficiency. Mismatched components can't legally claim SEER2 ratings and may void manufacturer warranties.

T

Tonnage (cooling capacity)

Measured in tons or BTU/h. 1 ton is about 12,000 BTU/h or 600 sq ft of conditioned space. Split system shoppers get this decision correct more often than component shoppers because the paired system is sized as a unit — no chance of mismatching condenser tonnage to air handler capacity.

E

SEER2 (efficiency)

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2, the current DOE test standard. Higher number = lower electric bill. Southern states require 14.3 SEER2 minimum; Northern states allow 13.4. Pre-matched systems ensure you hit the advertised SEER2 in real-world operation.

R

Refrigerant type

R-32 and R-454B are the two compliant refrigerants under the 2026 AIM Act phase-down. R-410A is legacy — still legal to install existing stock, but supply is shrinking. Both the condenser and air handler in a split system use the same refrigerant; our matched systems handle this automatically.

H

Heat kit (electric backup heat)

Most split systems on this page include a factory heat kit (typically 5 kW) for supplemental or emergency heat. Useful for shoulder-season cool mornings and mild-climate heating. If you need more heating capacity, look at heat pump systems or add a higher-capacity heat kit separately.

R-32 vs. R-410A refrigerant

Why we're moving away from R-410A and what it means for split system buyers

R-410A Legacy refrigerant
Charge required Higher

Availability Decreasing
R-32 Next-gen refrigerant
Charge required Lower

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about A/C split systems — sizing, matching, and installation

What's an AC split system?

A split system has two main components: the outdoor condenser (the unit that sits outside your home and handles refrigerant compression and heat rejection) and the indoor air handler (the cabinet with the cooling coil and blower that circulates air through your ducts). They're connected by refrigerant lines and electrical. On this page, both components are pre-matched, rated together by AHRI, and shipped together — you get the complete cooling system in one order.

Why buy a matched system instead of condenser + air handler separately?

Three reasons. (1) Warranty protection — most manufacturers require an AHRI-certified match to honor their 10-year parts warranty. (2) Real-world efficiency — the SEER2 rating on the label is only guaranteed when the matched components are installed together. (3) Simpler ordering and shipping — one order, one delivery, matched tonnage and refrigerant. The bundled price is also typically lower than buying the components individually.

How do I know what size (tonnage) I need?

The quick rule of thumb is 1 ton of cooling per 600 sq ft of conditioned space — so a 1,500 sq ft home typically needs a 2.5-ton system. That's a starting point. Real sizing (called a Manual J load calculation) accounts for ceiling height, insulation, windows, sun exposure, climate zone, and occupancy. Call us at (352) 438-8992 for a free sizing check — it's worth getting right because oversized systems short-cycle and waste energy.

What's included when I buy a split system?

You get the outdoor condenser, indoor air handler (complete with evaporator coil and blower), and factory heat kit (electric strip heat, typically 5 kW). You do NOT get: the refrigerant lineset (sold separately, sized to your specific install), the thermostat, ductwork, or electrical components. Most installers will source these locally — we can point you to the right parts if needed.

Do I need a licensed HVAC contractor to install?

Yes. Professional installation by a licensed HVAC contractor is required to maintain your manufacturer warranty and — for R-32 and R-454B equipment — to comply with EPA Section 608 regulations on refrigerant handling. A split system install typically takes one to two days and involves setting the condenser on a pad, installing the air handler indoors, running refrigerant lines, electrical, and the condensate drain, then evacuating and charging the system.

How long does a split system last?

A properly installed and maintained split system typically lasts 15-20 years. The air handler usually outlives the condenser (indoor units aren't weather-exposed). Coastal installations tend to sit on the shorter end for the condenser (salt air corrodes coil fins). Annual maintenance — spring coil cleaning, filter changes, refrigerant charge check — adds meaningful life and keeps efficiency close to the original spec.

Does Ace Air Direct ship split systems nationwide?

Yes. We ship complete split systems to all 48 contiguous states from our warehouse in Ocala, FL. Complete systems ship free — both components together on one freight pallet. Most orders leave within 1-3 business days via freight carrier with tracking and a scheduled delivery appointment. Local pickup is available in Ocala for additional savings.
