Ductless heat pump systems — one room, no renovation

A mini split (also called a ductless system) is a compact heat pump designed to cool and heat a single room or zone without adding ductwork. The outdoor unit connects to an indoor wall-mounted air handler through a small refrigerant line set — typically installed through a 3-inch hole in an exterior wall. It's the default answer when adding central HVAC would mean expensive renovation, or when a specific room needs its own climate control.

Every mini split on this page is a heat pump (cools in summer, heats in winter), uses R-32 refrigerant (2026-compliant), and is shipped from our Ocala, FL warehouse — usually out the door within 1-3 business days. What to look at when choosing

Five things that matter for mini split sizing and installation

BTU (sized per room, not per home)

Unlike central HVAC, mini splits are sized room-by-room in BTU. Rough guide: 12K BTU covers ~500 sq ft, 18K covers ~750, 24K covers ~1,000, 36K covers ~1,500. A bedroom or office typically needs 9-12K; a large living room or open-plan space 18-24K. Oversizing is worse than undersizing — it causes short-cycling and poor humidity control.

Heat pump operation (year-round)

Every mini split on this page is a heat pump — cooling in summer, heating in winter from the same outdoor unit. Mini splits often maintain efficient heating down to 5°F (lower than most central heat pumps) thanks to variable-speed compressors and cold-climate engineering.

Voltage (115V vs 230V)

Smaller mini splits (9K-12K BTU) often run on standard 115V household circuits — plug into an existing outlet or add a dedicated 15/20 amp line. Larger units (18K+) typically require 230V with a dedicated 20-30 amp circuit, same as a clothes dryer. Check the product title or spec sheet before ordering.

Mini splits score well on efficiency because they run variable-speed — the compressor ramps smoothly to match demand instead of cycling on and off. Units on this page are 17-21 SEER2, substantially higher than typical central AC. Lower summer electric bills and quieter operation than ducted alternatives.

Installation (what's involved)

A mini split install involves mounting the indoor head on an interior wall, running a small refrigerant line set through a 3" hole in the wall, setting the outdoor condenser on a pad or wall bracket, and electrical. Typically a one-day install. EPA Section 608 certification is required for the refrigerant handling — hire a licensed installer unless your specific product is explicitly labeled DIY-friendly with pre-charged lines.

Common questions about mini split systems — sizing, installation, and performance

What's a mini split, and when does it make sense?

A mini split (also called a ductless system) is a compact heat pump with an outdoor condenser and one or more indoor wall-mounted air handlers — no ductwork required. They make the most sense in three scenarios: (1) additions and outbuildings like sunrooms, garages, workshops, or detached offices where running ductwork isn't practical; (2) older homes where adding central HVAC would mean expensive renovation; and (3) problem zones in homes with central HVAC — a bonus room over the garage, a master suite that runs hot, a converted attic.

How is this different from a window AC?

Better in nearly every way, for more money. Window units are single-speed (full on or off) and only cool — no heating. Mini splits are variable-speed (ramp smoothly to match demand), much quieter, dramatically more efficient, and heat as well as cool. Window units install in 20 minutes; mini splits take a licensed installer a day. If you just need to cool one room for two hot months a year, a window unit is fine. For year-round comfort with lower operating cost, mini split.

How many BTU do I need?

Rough sizing by room: 9-12K BTU for bedrooms, small offices, or rooms up to ~500 sq ft. 18K BTU for master suites, large bedrooms, or open spaces up to ~750 sq ft. 24K BTU for great rooms or open-plan areas up to ~1,000 sq ft. 36K BTU for very large open spaces or multi-room zones up to ~1,500 sq ft. Climate, ceiling height, sun exposure, and insulation all affect sizing — these are starting points.

115V or 230V — which do I need?

Check the product title. 115V units (typically 9-12K BTU) plug into a standard household outlet or dedicated 15-20 amp line — easiest electrical setup, a good fit if you're adding climate to a bedroom, office, or small addition. 230V units (typically 18K+ BTU) require a dedicated 20-30 amp circuit, similar to a clothes dryer or electric range — your installer will need to run a new line from your panel.

Will a mini split heat my room when it's really cold?

Yes — modern mini splits are rated for heating performance down to 5°F ambient outdoor temperature, with some cold-climate models going to -15°F or lower. Below those points, the unit can still run but produces less heat per watt. In climates that regularly see single-digit temperatures, plan for a backup heat source (electric space heater, baseboard, or a gas furnace for the primary areas of the home).
