Year-round comfort in one box: an Oxbox 3 ton heat pump outdoor unit, a matched upflow air handler, and an 8 kW electric heat kit. Together they make up the equipment side of a complete heating and cooling system for a mid-size home.

Key Features

At 3 tons and 15.2 SEER2, this Oxbox heat pump system sits in Oxbox's higher efficiency tier. The extra efficiency pays off most where the system runs for much of the year. In summer it cools; in winter the same outdoor unit reverses to pull heat in from outside air, with the included 8 kW heat strip standing by for the coldest mornings, defrost cycles, or emergency heat. This matchup uses the J5AH5E36A1B00AA air handler, an upflow unit with a 1/2 HP blower motor. It is a practical match for mid-size single-family homes, pending a load calculation from your installer. It uses R-454B refrigerant on standard 208/230V single-phase power and is approved for both DOE North and South regions.

  • One system, two seasons: the heat pump reverses refrigerant flow to heat your home in winter and cool it in summer.
  • Scroll compressor: a proven compressor design known for smooth, steady operation and long service life.
  • Upflow air handler with built-in evaporator coil: matched to this outdoor unit, with a 1/2 HP blower motor moving air through your ductwork.
  • 15.2 SEER2 efficiency: a step above minimum efficiency, which adds up in climates where the AC runs most of the year.
  • 8 kW auxiliary heat kit, included: installs inside the air handler and steps in automatically when the heat pump needs help or during defrost. No separate purchase to track down.
  • Straightforward electrical: 21.5 A minimum circuit ampacity on the outdoor unit keeps breaker and wire sizing simple for a 3 ton install.
  • R-454B refrigerant: a lower global warming potential refrigerant that meets current EPA requirements for new systems.

Common Questions

What else do I need for installation?
Plan on a copper line set sized for your run, a condenser pad, an outdoor disconnect, electrical wiring, and a heat-pump-compatible thermostat. Refrigerant work must be done by a licensed HVAC technician.
When does the heat kit turn on?
Your thermostat brings on the 8 kW heat strip when the heat pump can't keep up on its own, during defrost cycles, or when you switch to emergency heat. Most of the time, the heat pump does the heating by itself.
Is 3 tons the right size for my home?
3 tons is a common fit for mid-size single-family homes, but square footage alone isn't a reliable guide. Insulation, windows, sun exposure, and ductwork all matter. A Manual J load calculation from your installer is the best way to confirm sizing before you buy.
14.3 or 15.2 SEER2: which should I choose?
Both meet current efficiency requirements. The 15.2 SEER2 systems cost a bit more up front and use less electricity to cool, so they make the most sense where the system runs much of the year. The 14.3 SEER2 systems keep the purchase price lower. This system is the 15.2 SEER2 version.
