When the old air handler hangs on the wall, this is the kind of system that replaces it. You get a 3 ton Oxbox heat pump, a front-return wall-hung air handler, and a 5 kW electric heat kit in one matched package.

Key Features

This Oxbox 3 ton heat pump split system is rated at 14.3 SEER2, Oxbox's standard efficiency tier. The heat pump handles both heating and cooling, and the 5 kW heat kit in the air handler steps in when outdoor temperatures drop or the system goes through defrost. The indoor unit hangs on the wall and pulls return air through its front grille, which keeps the footprint small in closets and utility spaces. It is a practical match for mid-size single-family homes, pending a load calculation from your installer. It uses R-454B refrigerant on standard 208/230V single-phase power and is approved for both DOE North and South regions.

  • One system, two seasons: the heat pump reverses refrigerant flow to heat your home in winter and cool it in summer.
  • 5 kW auxiliary heat kit, included: installs inside the air handler and steps in automatically when the heat pump needs help or during defrost. No separate purchase to track down.
  • Wall-hung air handler: mounts directly on the wall, freeing up floor space and making it a direct path for replacing an existing wall-mounted closet unit.
  • Front return air: air returns through the front of the cabinet, eliminating the need for a separate return plenum or stand underneath.
  • R-454B refrigerant: the low-GWP A2L refrigerant replacing R-410A in new residential equipment.
  • Scroll compressor: fewer moving parts than older piston designs, for steady, dependable operation.
  • 76 dB sound rating: the outdoor unit's published sound level, useful for planning placement near bedrooms, patios, or neighbors.

Common Questions

What else do I need for installation?
Plan on a copper line set sized for your run, a condenser pad, an outdoor disconnect, electrical wiring, wall-mounting hardware, a return filter, and a heat-pump-compatible thermostat. Refrigerant work must be done by a licensed HVAC technician.
Will this fit where my old wall-mounted unit was?
It's designed for exactly that kind of space: closets and utility areas where the air handler hangs on the wall and pulls return air through its front. Before ordering, compare the cabinet dimensions and duct connection points against your existing unit, and have your installer confirm clearances and wall support.
What does front return mean?
Return air (the air pulled back from your living space to be cooled or heated) enters through a filter grille on the front of the air handler. That removes the need for a return plenum or platform under the unit, which is what lets it work in shallow closets and wall-mounted setups.
Why does a heat pump need a heat kit?
A heat pump heats by moving warmth from outdoor air into your home, and it gets less efficient as temperatures drop. The 5 kW heat strip covers that gap on the coldest days, keeps air warm during defrost cycles, and gives you emergency heat if the outdoor unit ever needs service.
