Heats AND Cools

What comes in this kit?
Two components shipped together: (1) the outdoor heat pump GLZS4BA3010A and (2) the indoor air handler AMST30BU13. Line set (refrigerant tubing), thermostat, ductwork, condensate drain, and electrical wiring are NOT included and are supplied by your HVAC contractor. Electric heat kits for cold-weather backup are also sold separately.
How does a heat pump heat my home?
A heat pump uses refrigerant to move heat between outdoors and indoors. In summer it absorbs heat from inside and releases it outside (cooling). In winter, a reversing valve flips the cycle: the outdoor unit extracts heat from the outdoor air (even when it's cold outside) and moves it inside. When outdoor temperatures drop below the heat pump's efficient operating range, supplemental electric heat kits installed in the air handler provide additional heat.
Heat pump vs. gas furnace — which should I choose?
Choose a heat pump if you're in an all-electric home, a mild-to-moderate climate, or want the efficiency benefits of electric heating. Choose a gas furnace (with a separate AC condenser) if you have natural gas service and are in a cold climate where gas heat is typically more cost-effective during the coldest months. Heat pumps have improved dramatically in cold weather performance over the past decade, but local utility rates and climate still matter.
Do I need a backup heat kit?
In mild climates, a heat pump alone is often sufficient. In colder climates, a field-installable electric heat kit is recommended — it runs when outdoor temperatures drop below the heat pump's efficient operating range and kicks in during defrost cycles. Your HVAC contractor can size the kit based on your climate zone and heating load. The air handler in this kit is designed to accommodate these heat kits.
Why buy as a matched kit vs. separate components?
Matched systems are AHRI-certified to deliver their published SEER2 rating — mixing components from different manufacturers or model families often results in lower real-world efficiency and can complicate warranty claims. The factory match also ensures refrigerant line sizing, TXV calibration, and airflow are correct from day one.
What size home does this system serve?
A 2.5-ton system is generally appropriate for homes in the 1,200–1,600 sq. ft. range for cooling. Heating load is more climate-dependent — a professional Manual J load calculation by your HVAC contractor is the most accurate way to confirm the right system size for your specific home, especially for heat pump sizing in regions with significant heating demand.
What is R-32 refrigerant?
R-32 is the next-generation residential refrigerant replacing R-410A. It has lower environmental impact, requires up to 30% less charge per system, and offers improved energy efficiency. R-32 is being adopted industry-wide to meet EPA and AIM Act requirements phasing down legacy refrigerants. R-32 systems are not backward-compatible with R-410A equipment.
Can the air handler install in any orientation?
Yes — the AMST30BU13 is a Multi-Position air handler, supporting all four installation orientations: upflow, downflow, horizontal-left, and horizontal-right. Your HVAC contractor will select the orientation based on your home's ductwork layout.
How do I register the warranty?
Each component must be registered separately at Goodman's warranty registration page within 60 days of installation. You'll need the model number and serial number (from each data plate), installation date, and installing contractor information for both the heat pump and air handler. Without timely registration, warranty terms revert to a shorter base period.
