What is a package unit?
A package unit (also called a "packaged" or "self-contained" unit) houses the entire HVAC system — compressor, indoor coil, blower, and controls — in a single outdoor cabinet. A split system, by contrast, has a separate outdoor unit and indoor unit connected by refrigerant lines. Package units are popular for homes without indoor mechanical space, rooftop commercial installations, and manufactured or mobile homes.
Package unit vs. split system — which should I choose?
Choose a package unit when you have limited indoor space, a rooftop installation, or a manufactured/mobile home setup. Choose a split system when you want higher-efficiency options, quieter outdoor operation (indoor equipment is insulated from outdoor noise), and more flexible placement for the indoor unit. How does a heat pump package unit heat my home?
A heat pump uses refrigerant to move heat between outdoors and indoors. In summer it absorbs heat from inside and releases it outside (cooling); in winter, a reversing valve flips the cycle and it extracts heat from the outdoor air (even when cold) and moves it inside.
