Key Features

What sets the CAPTA1818B3A apart

R-32 Engineered

Optimized for R-32 refrigerant with a factory-installed R-32 refrigerant leakage detection sensor. R-32 is the next-generation residential refrigerant with lower environmental impact than the outgoing R-410A standard.

All-Aluminum Construction

Tubing, fins, and end plates are all aluminum — excellent heat transfer efficiency and inherent resistance to formicary corrosion, a common failure mode in traditional copper-tube coils, especially in humid climates.

Factory-Installed TXV

Comes with a factory-installed thermal expansion valve (TXV) for both cooling and heat pump applications. The TXV automatically meters refrigerant flow for consistent performance across varying load conditions.

Upflow or Downflow Installation

Designed for either upflow or downflow installation, fitting standard furnace and air handler cabinets. The 21" cabinet depth is built for easier access in attic installations.

Thermoplastic Drain Pan

Low water-retention thermoplastic drain pan with secondary drain connections. Foil-faced insulation reduces condensation; drain pan rails allow repositioning without compromising structural integrity.

Backed by Goodman

Covered by Goodman's 10-Year Parts Limited Warranty when registered within 60 days of installation. Galvanized, leather grain-embossed cabinet finish built for long service life.

This Goodman CAPTA vertical evaporator coil is designed for 1.5 ton R-32 systems with a factory-installed thermal expansion valve and an all-aluminum coil. The cabinet uses foil-faced insulation to reduce condensation, and the coil is built with optimized circuits and manifolds for R-32 refrigerant. Available in upflow and downflow configurations with a 21-inch depth for easier attic access.

  • Factory-installed TXV — thermal expansion valve included for both cooling and heat pump applications.
  • Optimized for R-32 refrigerant — circuits, manifolds, and full-coil R-32 sensor designed for the life span of the coil.
  • All-aluminum evaporator coil — lightweight, corrosion-resistant construction with standardized copper suction tube stub length.
  • Vertical and horizontal mounting — single front access panel for service in either orientation.
  • 21-inch cabinet depth — fits standard attic and closet installations more easily than deeper coils.
  • Foil-faced insulation — reduces cabinet condensation in humid environments.
  • Galvanized leather-grain finish — rust-resistant cabinet with thermoplastic drain pans.
  • DecaBDE-free drain pan — low water-retention design with secondary drain connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an evaporator coil do?
The evaporator coil is the indoor heat-exchange component in a split HVAC system. In cooling mode, refrigerant inside the coil absorbs heat from the indoor air passing over it, cooling and dehumidifying your home. In a heat pump system, the cycle reverses in winter and the coil releases heat into the indoor air instead. The coil must be matched to the outdoor condenser and the indoor airflow system for correct performance.
What does "R-32 Only" mean and why does it matter?
This coil is engineered specifically for R-32 refrigerant and cannot be used with older R-410A or R-22 systems. R-32 has different operating pressures and oil compatibility than legacy refrigerants, so mixing them will damage equipment and void warranties. If your existing outdoor unit uses R-410A or R-22, this coil is not a compatible replacement.
How do I know if this cabinet size fits my furnace or air handler?
Goodman coils use cabinet width codes that match the furnace or air handler beneath them: A = 14" wide, B = 17-1/2" wide, C = 21" wide, D = 24-1/2" wide. The CAPTA1818B3A is a Cabinet B (17-1/2" wide). For best fit, match the coil cabinet letter to your Goodman furnace or air handler cabinet letter. Your HVAC contractor can confirm compatibility with non-Goodman equipment.
Can I pair this coil with my existing condenser?
Only if your condenser uses R-32 refrigerant. For rated efficiency and warranty coverage, the coil should be part of an AHRI-certified matched system — typically a Goodman R-32 condenser or heat pump designed to pair with the CAPTA coil family. Your HVAC contractor can verify AHRI match using the model numbers.
What's a TXV and why does it matter?
A thermal expansion valve (TXV) is a refrigerant metering device that automatically adjusts refrigerant flow into the coil based on cooling demand. Compared to fixed-orifice metering, a TXV maintains more consistent performance across changing indoor and outdoor conditions, improves efficiency, and is required for most modern AHRI-certified matched systems. The CAPTA1818B3A ships with the TXV factory-installed.
What does "Vertical" mean for a coil?
A vertical coil is designed to sit directly above or below a furnace or air handler, with airflow moving vertically through the coil. This coil supports both upflow (air moves upward through the coil from a furnace below) and downflow (air moves downward through the coil from a furnace above) installations. Your contractor will select the orientation based on your home's ductwork layout.
Why all-aluminum construction?
All-aluminum coils (tubing, fins, end plates) resist formicary corrosion — a pinhole-leak failure mode that can affect traditional copper-tube coils, particularly in humid climates or homes exposed to certain common indoor chemicals. Aluminum also transfers heat efficiently and keeps the coil lighter than equivalent copper designs.
How do I register for the 10-year warranty?
Register the unit online at Goodman's warranty registration page within 60 days of installation. You'll need the model number (CAPTA1818B3A), serial number (found on the data plate), installation date, and installing contractor information. Without registration, the warranty reverts to a shorter base term.
