Why this heat pump works

Heats AND Cools — One Unit

A heat pump reverses its refrigerant cycle to cool in summer and heat in winter. One outdoor unit, year-round comfort, no separate furnace required in mild-to-moderate climates. Fewer systems to maintain.

R-32 Refrigerant — Built for What's Next

R-32 is the new residential refrigerant standard, replacing R-410A. It runs up to 10% more efficient, uses about 30% less charge per system, and meets today's EPA AIM Act rules. This heat pump is built for it from day one.

Two-Stage Scroll Compressor

Two-stage operation runs at lower capacity when the weather is mild and ramps up when demand picks up. The result: better part-load efficiency, steadier indoor temperatures, and stronger humidity control in summer.

15.2 SEER2 Efficiency

Rated at 15.2 SEER2 under the current M1 testing standard. Pair with a matched indoor coil or air handler for AHRI-certified heating and cooling performance.

Built to Take It

Heavy-gauge galvanized steel cabinet. Louvered coil guard to shield internal components from impact and debris. Engineered for year-round outdoor operation through both heating and cooling seasons.

Backed by Ace Air

10-Year Parts Limited Warranty and 10-Year Compressor Limited Warranty when registered within 60 days of installation. Simple, documented, backed.

The GLZS5B heat pump condenser delivers 5.0 ton of cooling and heating capacity (60,000 BTU) at 15.2 SEER2 efficiency, running on R-32 refrigerant. The high-efficiency scroll compressor and SmartShift® defrost technology provide quieter, more reliable operation in cold weather, and the unit is ENERGY STAR® certified. AHRI Certified and ETL Listed.

  • High-efficiency scroll compressor — delivers improved seasonal efficiency over reciprocating designs.
  • SmartShift® defrost technology — manages the defrost cycle quietly, reducing the abrupt sounds typical of older heat pumps.
  • Pre-charged with R-32 refrigerant — factory-charged for 15 feet of line set to reduce installation time.
  • Copper tube / enhanced aluminum fin coil — 5mm-diameter design on 1.5–3.5 ton models for efficient heat transfer.
  • Factory-installed compressor crankcase heater — keeps oil viscosity correct in cold weather for reliable cold-temperature starts.
  • Factory-installed suction-line accumulator — protects the compressor from liquid refrigerant slugging during defrost.
  • ENERGY STAR® certified — meets EPA efficiency criteria when properly matched with an indoor coil or air handler.
  • Sweat-connection service valves — easy-access gauge ports for installation and seasonal service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a heat pump actually work?
A heat pump uses refrigerant to move heat between inside and outside. In summer it works like an AC — pulling heat out of your home and releasing it outdoors. In winter a reversing valve flips the cycle: the unit extracts heat from the outdoor air (even when it's cold) and moves it inside. Same equipment, opposite direction, year-round comfort.
What size home does a 5.0-ton heat pump cover?
5.0-ton units typically handle homes in the 2,500–3,200 sq. ft. range for cooling. Heating loads and climate zone change the math though — a professional Manual J load calculation is the right way to size for your specific home, especially in regions with hard winters.
What is SEER2?
SEER2 is the DOE's current cooling efficiency rating — a 2023 update that uses more realistic test conditions than the old SEER standard. Higher number means lower summer electric bills. The AAD-GLZS5BA6010A rates at 15.2 SEER2. Heating efficiency is measured separately (HSPF2) — check your matched-system spec sheet for the HSPF2 number.
Can a heat pump heat my home when it's really cold?
Modern heat pumps deliver useful heating well below freezing, but capacity does drop as outdoor temps fall. In colder climates, heat pumps are usually paired with electric heat strips in the indoor air handler — they kick on automatically when outdoor temps fall below the heat pump's balance point. Your contractor will size the backup for your climate zone.
Do I need backup heat strips?
Usually yes if your winters see freezing temperatures. Heat strips sit in the indoor air handler as a safety net for very cold days and as emergency heat when the heat pump is being serviced. Whether you need them depends on your climate, insulation, and heating load. Most installs in cold climates include a matched air handler with heat kit accommodation.
What is R-32 refrigerant and why the switch from R-410A?
R-32 is replacing R-410A as the standard residential refrigerant. It runs more efficiently, uses roughly 30% less charge per system, and has a lower climate impact. EPA and AIM Act rules are phasing out R-410A — R-32 is the direction the whole industry is going.
Can I pair this with my existing indoor coil or air handler?
Only if your indoor unit is R-32. R-32 and R-410A run at different pressures with different oils — mix them and you'll damage the equipment and void the warranty. For rated SEER2 performance, use an AHRI-certified matched R-32 indoor coil or air handler.
Do I need AHRI-certified matching?
The rated SEER2 applies to specific matched component combinations. Install this condenser with a non-matched coil and you won't hit the rated efficiency. You may also run into warranty issues and local code problems. Always install as an AHRI-certified matched system.
How loud is 74.8 dB in practical terms?
74.8 dB is in normal range for a 5.0-ton residential heat pump. For reference: normal conversation is around 60 dB, a dishwasher runs around 70 dB, a gas lawn mower hits 85 dB from 50 ft. Install away from bedroom windows and patios when you can, and keep clearance requirements in mind for airflow in both heating and cooling modes.
What maintenance does a heat pump need?
Keep the outdoor coil clear of leaves, grass clippings, and debris. Maintain at least 24 inches of clearance on all sides for airflow. Get a licensed HVAC tech out for an annual tune-up — ideally before each cooling season — covering coil cleaning, refrigerant charge check, reversing valve function, and electrical inspection. In winter, keep snow and ice from piling up around the unit.
How do I register for the 10-year warranty?
Register at Ace Air's warranty page within 60 days of installation. You need: model number (AAD-GLZS5BA6010A), serial number (from the data plate), install date, and installing contractor info. Miss the 60-day window and you drop to the shorter base warranty.
